FPGB Mini is a smaller, cheaper Game Boy clone

FunnyPlaying, a Chinese company known for its Game Boy and GBA upgrade kits, has announced the FPGB Mini, a handheld that plays original Nintendo cartridges and ROMs.

Its cartridge support is limited to Game Boy and Game Boy Color, so it is less capable than the Analogue Pocket, which also supports GBA and Sega Game Gear. The FPGB Mini is designed to be extremely pocketable, measuring only slightly wider than a Game Boy cartridge. It also costs less.

Following recent price hikes, the Analogue Pocket costs $239.99. The FPGB Mini is currently discounted from $89.99 to $69.99, but that introductory price applied to a first batch of just 20 units, which quickly sold out. According to Retro Dodo, which has tested the handheld for a few days, FunnyPlaying may release more units after making hardware improvements.

Like the Pocket, the FPGB Mini uses field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games with accuracy comparable to Nintendo’s original hardware. It adds a 2.98-inch, 800x720-pixel LCD display, an 1,800mAh rechargeable battery, and a microSD slot for game saves, screenshots, or ROMs played through emulation.

Its compact size prevents cartridges with rumble motors or other hardware additions from being used. Otherwise, the FPGB Mini appears to be about as small as the Game Boy can get.
