Fox News aired 203 claims in favor of data centers in the two weeks after an August 18, 2026, warning from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), up from 39 in the preceding two weeks, according to research by Media Matters. The organization, a nonprofit journalism watchdog, said pro-data center perspectives from Fox News hosts and guests quintupled.
The NRSC warning said Republican candidates were losing ground to Democrats in key battleground states. A private memo, reported by Axios, urged technology companies to change public views of AI data centers, arguing that opposition could help Democrats who want to stop construction and risk the United States losing the AI race to China.
The research found that favorable claims outnumbered claims against data centers by almost two to one. About 56% of claims described AI data centers as essential to US progress and prosperity; 43% said opposition was fueled by “bad actors,” including far-left activists and the Chinese government.
The article said the issue is salient ahead of the November US midterm elections. In Ohio, Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown’s campaign is drawing on opposition to data centers, which Republicans fear could hurt incumbent Jon Husted. Media Matters also noted that opposition crosses party lines, with much of it coming from working-class communities regardless of political leaning.
