Melody Chu and Jing Liu, two former TikTok employees, have launched Superpose, an iOS camera app that uses an AI guide to teach people how to pose for pictures.
Users can take a selfie or photograph a friend, and Superpose generates four potential poses. Some suggestions can appear extravagant or uncanny. Users can save poses or use the match pose feature to position themselves in the frame based on the app’s suggestions.
Chu told TechCrunch that the idea came from her frustration with receiving poor photos from her husband. Before founding Superpose, she held product roles at Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, TikTok, and Slack. Liu was a founding engineer at a 3D face-scanning startup and later worked on image and video models at TikTok.
Superpose launched in July and has been downloaded over 22,000 times, according to the company. Users have generated more than 190,000 poses. The app offers five generations free each day. Additional packs cost $2.99 for five generations or $9.99 for 20 generations.
Chu said Superpose is focusing on real-life portrait photography rather than AI-generated backgrounds and images. The startup says it is improving generation styles, personalization, and coaching from the viewfinder. Superpose has raised $2.2 million from Khosla Ventures, Meitu, and OVTR Ventures.
