Elegoo M1 Ultra review: a capable handheld 3D scanner

Elegoo’s M1 Ultra combines blue-laser and infrared structured-light scanning in a handheld device aimed at small businesses, makers, enthusiasts and 3D professionals. TechRadar reviewer Alastair Jennings found its build quality and scan detail impressive, while noting that results depend on preparation.

The scanner has five scanning configurations for objects ranging from small mechanical parts to larger structures and people. In its finest blue-laser mode, Elegoo lists a top accuracy of 0.02 mm. The device also offers wireless operation, a 3-inch touchscreen and a swappable battery.

Jennings says the scanner produced detailed, dimensionally accurate models from household ornaments, mechanical components and structural parts. They could be exported for 3D printing or imported into Blender for editing. The initial software preview looked rougher than the processed model, where more detail appeared. Scan processing typically took a couple of minutes, depending on complexity and size.

The review found the software stable during testing and the scanner comfortable to handle. However, glossy black plastic and highly reflective surfaces still required scanning spray. Jennings also found that wireless scanning takes over the computer’s Wi-Fi connection, preventing access to a regular workshop wireless network.

TechRadar reports recommended prices of $1,699 in the US, £1,399 in the UK and €1,699. The review describes the M1 Ultra as a strong option at a reasonable price, while making clear that scan quality depends on preparation and marker placement.
