ChatGPT’s Virtual Try-On Gets Clothes Right but Alters Body Shape

TechRadar’s Becca Caddy tested ChatGPT’s virtual try-on feature and found that it could show clothes convincingly, but sometimes changed her proportions. That could limit its usefulness for judging how an item would actually fit.

The feature lets users upload a photo and select Try On beside supported shopping results, or provide an image of an item and ask ChatGPT to show it on them. Caddy tried suede jackets, formal dresses and an outfit for a 1920s-style ball. She said the generated clothes looked realistic, and the images helped her assess colors against her own skin and hair.

To compare a generated image with reality, Caddy tried on an oversized suede jacket she had found through ChatGPT. She said the result was not a controlled comparison because she did not match the image’s pose or camera angle. Even so, she thought the AI did a good job representing the jacket’s loose shape and how its material fell.

However, she noticed that the generated figure appeared taller and more statuesque, with a shorter torso and longer legs than her own. Caddy argued that this matters because the feature is meant to show how clothes look on a user’s body. She said accuracy matters more than flattery for that purpose, and remained skeptical about the experience.

ChatGPT’s image generation had become more realistic since its Images 2.5 update, according to the article. Caddy’s account suggests convincing clothing imagery may not ensure an accurate depiction of body proportions.
