Bluesky has applied to make “.bsky” an internet domain suffix, a move that could let users replace longer social handles with shorter domain names. The application has not been approved.
Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider said the company’s request will be among the applications that ICANN, the nonprofit that oversees internet domain names, publishes on October 7, 2026. The process is expected to take 18 to 24 months.
If approved, a handle such as @sarahp.bsky.social could become “sarahp.bsky.” Bluesky said it has not decided how people would request, register or receive .bsky domains. The company also said it has no plans to sell or otherwise monetize them.
Bluesky COO Rose Wang told TechCrunch that selling domains would conflict with the company’s belief in an open web. She said domains let people control their online identity, and that Bluesky was built on the idea that people should own their online presence rather than rent it from a platform that could take it away.
The company’s plans could also allow it to expand user profiles beyond pages with a bio and posts into more comprehensive personal home pages. That possibility depends on approval of the application.
