Audi says it is the first automaker to introduce Spotify’s dedicated in-car app, developed with Spotify and Volkswagen Group software company Cariad. The app is designed to offer more of Spotify’s features than the template-based version available on some cars running Android Automotive.
Its layout is closer to Spotify on desktop computers and makes use of the car’s infotainment display. In vehicles equipped with passenger screens, front-seat passengers can watch music videos while the car is moving, view real-time lyrics, scan QR codes to join listening parties, and create road-trip playlists. Audi says those features are blocked on its central display once the wheels start rolling.
Audi says the app is the first native version to include music videos, real-time lyrics, Spotify Jam and Spotify DJ. It has not said whether the app will come to other Volkswagen Group models or vehicles from other automakers.
The automaker says its AI-powered voice assistant can control music while driving using the “Hey Audi” command to change playlists or search for tracks. Users need a Spotify account and a smartphone to sign in. Audi says the app is available to download free from the Audi Application Store.
