Anthropic policy bans repeated abuse of Claude and election interference

Anthropic has updated its usage policy to explicitly prohibit several types of misuse, including election interference, weapons software, surveillance and repeated verbal abuse of Claude.

The policy says the abuse rule applies only in extreme cases, when users repeatedly act cruelly toward the model without a discernible purpose. It says the rule does not cover ordinary frustration, criticism, dark creative themes, or model testing and research.

Since an update in August, Claude has been trained to end conversations involving “persistently harmful or abusive user interactions.” The new policy goes further by expressly barring users from pursuing those interactions.

Other provisions prohibit broadly deceptive campaigns, including using Claude to operate fake accounts or fabricated news outlets. A section titled “Do Not Undermine Democratic Processes” addresses deceiving voters and disrupting elections.
