Amazon’s ‘Ask this book’ AI feature rolls out to some Kindles

Amazon has begun rolling out its ‘Ask this book’ AI feature to some Kindle e-readers, according to user reports cited by TechRadar. The feature is included in software version 5.20.2.

Reports indicate that the update has reached the Kindle Colorsoft 2026 and Kindle Paperwhite 2026. Amazon has not confirmed which models support the feature, and the software update has no release notes so far. It is also unclear whether other 2026 Kindle models or earlier generations will get it.

Amazon launched ‘Ask this book’ almost a year ago, initially making it available only through the Kindle app for iOS in the US. The feature lets readers ask questions about a supported book, with answers based on their progress or, if they choose, the whole book. TechRadar says a Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition 2024 in the UK had not received the update at the time of its report. Availability in other regions remains uncertain, and there is currently no way to force the update.

The rollout may happen in stages. The feature has drawn criticism from some Reddit commenters, who described it as invasive or said they disliked it.
