Alexa voice commands may no longer control audio playing through the 3.5mm aux input on older Amazon Echo speakers. Commands to play or pause audio from line in may stop working.
Ars Technica reported that a Reddit user said they received a message from Amazon about the change. The publication also said an unnamed Amazon spokesperson confirmed it. Amazon did not provide an on-the-record statement when contacted by The Verge.
The message did not explain why the feature was removed. It also did not mention changes to audio output, such as connecting an external speaker to an Echo Dot. Control of the aux port through the app’s settings menu appears to remain available.
Amazon has not released an Echo speaker with a 3.5mm aux port for years, Ars Technica noted. Last year, Amazon also removed an Echo feature that let users opt out of sending voice recordings to the cloud.
