AI adoption complicates employee reviews for managers, survey finds

AI tools may help employees work faster, but a survey commissioned by Monday.com suggests they are making it harder for managers to assess performance and oversee expanding software systems.

Nielsen surveyed 1,700 directors and senior managers across seven countries. More than half said evaluating employees’ work had become harder after adopting AI, as polished output can make it difficult to distinguish employees’ contributions from AI-generated work. Nearly half said they now spend more time reviewing and guiding team output.

Most respondents were positive about AI: 94% said they were excited to improve work with it. Still, 78% said they had changed how they evaluate employees, giving more weight to skills such as writing prompts, choosing tasks to delegate to AI, and experimenting with new work methods.

AI is also entering the review process. The survey found that 46% of managers use AI to inform decisions, while 39% of leaders use it to draft performance reviews. Monday.com’s Michal Miller Levi, head of market research and customer insights, told TechCrunch that companies have yet to work out how to address potential bias in those decisions.

Managers also reported growing complexity in their software systems: 57% said their organizations had more tools in circulation, and about 51% said the tools had become more interdependent. Only 29% described their AI infrastructure as fully optimized and centralized. Meanwhile, 58% expect to oversee more AI agents than human employees within the next year, and 46% worry about losing control over agents’ actions.
