Tesla has agreed to rename its Full Self-Driving (FSD) driver assistance technology “Tesla Assisted Driving” in Europe and the UK, following intervention from Germany’s transport ministry. The new name now appears on Tesla websites in both markets.
Germany’s Transport Minister, Steffen Bilger, said the system’s previous name was “somewhat misleading.” A ministry statement described it as a driver assistance system that can support tasks such as accelerating, braking and steering, while emphasizing that drivers must remain attentive at all times.
The change comes as governments tighten rules on how assisted-driving systems can be marketed. In the UK, terms including “self-driving” are to be reserved for authorized or listed vehicles. Under the 2024 Automated Vehicles Act, expected to take effect on January 7, 2027, a vehicle meets the self-driving test only if it does not need monitoring or control by an individual, according to the Department for Transport.
Meanwhile, BMW says it will expand its Symbiotic Drive assistance functions in Germany early next year. The SAE Level 2 system is designed to support driving from motorways to cities, including turns, lane changes and roundabouts. BMW says drivers must remain attentive and ready to take over. The system is set to reach the iX3, iX4, 3 Series, 7 Series and X5 in Germany first, with an over-the-air software update; other countries are expected to follow.
