Topping DX1 II review: detailed sound, but a laid-back character

TechRadar’s Simon Lucas reviews the Topping DX1 II, a desktop digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier. He describes it as a substantial specification upgrade over the original DX1, with a sturdy aluminum build and extensive connection and sound-adjustment options.

The DX1 II uses an ESS ES90392QM chipset, dual-DAC architecture and an XMOS XU-316 processor. It supports audio files up to 32bit/384kHz and DSD256. Connections include optical and USB-C inputs, a 3.5mm headphone output, balanced 4.4mm outputs, stereo RCA line output and optical output. A switch offers UAC 1.0 and UAC 2.0 modes; TechRadar notes that UAC 1.0 enables compatibility with devices such as Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.

Users can adjust gain and choose from eight digital filters through the Home Web platform. Topping Tune provides 10-band parametric equalization, with independent left- and right-channel adjustment. Lucas says these options can noticeably change the sound, though they cannot fully correct the unit’s limitations.

In his listening tests, Lucas praises detail retrieval, rhythmic expression and a natural, easy-going tonal balance. He also notes pronounced high-frequency roll-off and says the device gives large dynamic changes less impact. TechRadar reports current prices of $119 in the United States, £119 in the United Kingdom and around AU$169 in Australia. The review presents the DX1 II as a capable option, while noting competition at similar prices.
