1Password Prepares Secure Logins for AI Agents

Password manager 1Password has announced plans to let AI agents log in to user accounts without sharing the account password with the agent. The feature is part of a new platform called 1Password for Agents, which acts as a security layer between agents and accounts.

Under the system, an agent identifies itself to 1Password with a unique digital key. Users must still approve login requests on a trusted device. 1Password says plaintext credentials and one-time codes will not be shared with the agent.

The company says the change addresses a login step that can interrupt tasks delegated to AI agents. It is also working with OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta on integrations. 1Password Chief Product Officer Aashish Tripathi said agents should be able to complete assigned tasks without permanent access to everything in an account.

The upgrade will be free for Individual and Family customers on 1Password.com hosting. It will not be available on plans hosted at 1Password.eu or 1Password.ca. Grok Bot and Meta Muse are among the first agents slated for rollout in the coming days. ChatGPT Work, Dots and Claude Duet are listed as coming soon.
