Microsoft Teams to Add Context-Aware AI Phishing Detection in November

Microsoft plans to begin rolling out AI-powered phishing detection in Microsoft Teams in early November 2026. The feature will first reach users in a targeted release phase expected to end by mid-November. Microsoft expects worldwide general availability between early and mid-December.

The detection system will analyze conversation context to flag phishing, social engineering, impersonation attempts and deceptive intent, including suspicious behavior without familiar warning signs such as malicious links or files. Microsoft says it will focus on external first-contact chats for most users, and IT administrators will not need to take action to enable it.

Microsoft says the feature is for security protection only. It will not retain customer message content for AI model training or other secondary uses, and the company says it will not be used for productivity, summaries, advertising or user monitoring.

The planned detection adds to other Teams protections announced by Microsoft. These include a meeting policy that began rolling out in August to let administrators automatically block identified external bots, and a feature announced last month to blur QR codes sent by external users. Microsoft has also said it plans to support third-party deepfake detection and impersonation protection in Teams meetings.
