OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so ChatGPT can use browser tabs that are already open. The change follows the disappearance of the ChatGPT Atlas browser, according to The Verge.
OpenAI says users can tag Chrome in ChatGPT’s web or desktop app to let ChatGPT view their tabs. A demo video showed someone asking ChatGPT to compare three open tabs featuring sofas they were considering.
OpenAI’s sample tasks include using an event brief to fill out a registration form without submitting it, comparing vendors across tabs in a sheet with prices and source links, and drafting an email after comparing contractors. Another example asks ChatGPT to fill out a dental form and add the appointment to work and personal calendars.
The update also brings ChatGPT to a sidebar, where users can access their conversation history in Chat or Work without leaving the page they are viewing. OpenAI says ChatGPT Work can control Chrome tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize or group open tabs. The Verge compared the tab-control feature with Google’s Gemini-powered “auto browse.”
