Figma adds Specs, code layers and Payload integration

Figma announced new tools for defining design rules and building interactive prototypes at its first Config event in India. The company said the tools can give its own and third-party AI agents more context to follow a brand’s design language.

Figma Specs is a Markdown-based editor for documenting a design language. Teams can use it as a standalone file or alongside a canvas, and include references to Figma elements, FigJam diagrams, code layers, designs, libraries and guidelines. Agents can use that centralized information as a reference when creating in Figma.

Figma also moved its code layers feature into public beta. Announced in private beta in June, the feature adds code to canvas designs to make interactive prototypes. Users can ask an agent to turn a design into code or edit code as they iterate.

Chief design officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch that 17 times more lines of code are being produced than in the past, while releases have increased 1.3 times. She said some code is built to explore what a product could be rather than to ship.

The company said its MCP now supports more than 20 tools, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot and Indian AI startup Sarvam. Figma is also integrating Payload, the open-source headless CMS it acquired last year, with Figma Make, its product for generating dynamic websites and managing content. Figma said Payload downloads rose sixfold in the past 12 months.
