Rivian recalls R2 over battery-pack fasteners

Rivian has recalled its R2 SUV after finding that fasteners on the vehicle’s high-voltage battery pack may not have been properly tightened. The defect could cause a loss of power while driving.

The company said around 14 vehicles may be affected. Rivian plans to repair or replace damaged components in customer vehicles as needed. It told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) it was not aware of customer reports, accidents, injuries or deaths related to the issue.

According to an NHTSA filing, Rivian first identified the defect on September 17. A manufacturing operator at the company’s Normal, Illinois, factory noticed a fastener had been under-torqued by an automated assembly-line station. Rivian investigated and reprogrammed the station to reject improperly torqued fasteners.

This is the second recall for the R2, which began shipping to customers this year. The first, issued last month, concerned backup-camera visibility and was addressed with a software update.

Rivian has said it plans to ship between 20,000 and 25,000 R2 vehicles by the end of this year. Deliveries began in June, and the company has said early demand for the SUV is strong.
