Google is testing a Gemini feature called “Call for Me” that can call businesses on a user’s behalf. The experiment will initially be available in the U.S. to Pixel 11 owners with a Gemini subscription. It also requires the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android.
Users can approve personal information for Gemini to share during calls, and can follow the conversation or take over at any time. Calls use the user’s own phone number and are dialed directly from their phone. Google says the AI can call a store to check whether a product is in stock, make a restaurant reservation, reschedule an appointment or place items on hold. It can introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus and wait on hold. Users can follow the conversation through a live transcript.
The test builds on Google’s earlier AI-assisted calling work, including “Ask for Me” and Pixel features “Hold for Me,” “Talk to a Live Rep” and “Direct My Call.” Google says it is starting on a small scale because real-world conversations are nuanced and the feature needs more time before a broader rollout.
