Microsoft has fixed a known issue that displayed incorrect alerts saying Microsoft Defender Antivirus was turned off after recent updates, according to BleepingComputer.
Microsoft said in a Windows release health dashboard update that the fix was included in the Microsoft Defender Antivirus update, version 4.18.26080.4, released on September 17. The company acknowledged the issue in late August, although it had affected users in the Release Preview Channel of the Windows Insider program since at least June.
The bug affected all supported Windows client and server versions, including Windows 11 26H1 and Windows Server 2025. It caused the Windows Security app to prompt users to turn on Microsoft Defender Antivirus even when the antivirus was functioning correctly and its settings showed that it was active.
Microsoft said the notifications could appear when Windows started and intermittently afterward. They could also persist even when notification settings were disabled. The company’s update resolves the false alerts; the source does not report that the antivirus itself was disabled.
