Nintendo Switch 2 received docked VRR support 16 months after its launch, opening new performance options for developers. With VRR available while the console is docked, developers can implement 40 FPS modes or use unlocked framerates.
The feature is expected to benefit the vast majority of games, but existing software support remains limited. Games must be patched to take advantage of docked VRR, so the capability is not automatically available across the current library.
According to an early test by Digital Foundry's John Linneman, Nintendo Switch 2 is on par with Xbox Series X|S and soundly beats PlayStation 5 when comparing the systems' VRR capabilities. The result places Nintendo's current-generation system ahead of PS5 in this specific area.
Linneman said on Bluesky, “Games need to be patched, only Welcome Tour supports it now.” That statement highlights the central limitation: the hardware now supports docked VRR, but developers must update individual games before players can use it. For now, Welcome Tour is the only currently available game identified as supporting the feature.
