OpenAI forms math advisory group as AI claims more than 100 solutions

OpenAI has announced an independent advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence is intended to give mathematicians more input into the company’s mathematics research.

The announcement follows the abrupt publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI also claims that the same internal model has resolved more than 100 additional open problems across most areas of mathematics.

The group will assess the significance of new results and coordinate their release. Its 9 initial members will not be paid, but they can offer unsolicited advice, publish their views publicly, and control their own membership.

However, the group cannot slow or redirect OpenAI’s mathematical research. The Institute for Advanced Study said it has no decision-making power at any AI company, leaving responsibility for company decisions with the companies themselves. Only 1 initial member, IAS’s Camillo De Lellis, also signed an open letter from 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians criticizing the rapid release of AI-generated solutions to famous problems.
