Microsoft releases Windows 11 26H2, a small update for many users

Microsoft has started rolling out the Windows 11 2026 Update, also known as version 26H2. For many users, it will feel familiar: Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a servicing branch, and Microsoft has delivered many associated features through monthly updates.

Microsoft says supported devices receive 26H2 as a small enablement package rather than a full operating system replacement. On PCs running 24H2 or 25H2, installation is similar to a regular monthly cumulative update in most environments. The versions share a code base, security and quality updates, and compatibility validation; the enabled features distinguish them.

For commercial PCs, 26H2 enables some features that were not previously on by default, including Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions, and some File Explorer improvements.

There is an upgrade limitation for devices that shipped with Windows 11 26H1: Microsoft says they cannot update directly to 26H2 because 26H1 uses a different Windows core. Those devices will have a path to a future Windows release.

Installing 26H2 resets the support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support, while Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months.
