Meta’s new VR Glasses place the display and sensors on the face while connecting by wire to a computing puck carried in a pocket. The glasses weigh 100g, compared with 515g for the Quest 3. The design is intended to make VR easier to put on and remove than a conventional headset, although The Verge’s Jay Peters said the assessment was based on hands-on demonstrations at Meta’s campus.
The puck contains a Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, 128GB of storage, 12GB of RAM and a battery that Meta says supports up to three hours of media playback. The glasses use a 5K MicroOLED “Infinite Display” with 2412 x 2288 pixels per eye, 37 pixels per degree and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Two front cameras provide color passthrough, while two pairs of eye-tracking cameras and six external cameras support gaze and hand-gesture controls.
Meta is presenting the device for entertainment, gaming and work. The Verge viewed a 180-degree VR180 recording of the NBA Finals, a “VR Enhanced Cinema” version of Avengers: Endgame, and a hands-first Beat Saber mode called Flux. More than 75 games are expected to support the new hands-first experience at launch, including a VR version of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies arriving in 2027. Meta says enhanced versions of Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope will also be available at launch.
