Databricks acquires spreadsheet startup Row Zero

Databricks has acquired Row Zero, an early-stage cloud spreadsheet startup, and says it plans to pursue more acquisitions. The terms were not disclosed.

Databricks’ finance team used Row Zero because it could handle more than one million live spreadsheet rows. The company was combining the product with Genie, its AI agent, which lets users ask questions in natural language about business data stored in Databricks systems.

CEO Ali Ghodsi said the deal followed executives asking the finance team about the tool. In a post on X, he described spreadsheets as a familiar interface for business analysts and said combining business intelligence, agents and spreadsheets made sense. Databricks says the integration lets people work with data in spreadsheet form while keeping it in the company’s cloud storage.

Row Zero was founded by former AWS and Tableau engineers. It raised $10 million in May 2025 at an estimated $40 million valuation at the time, according to PitchBook.

Databricks closed another $5 billion in funding in August and reported a $7 billion annualized revenue run rate. Its 2026 acquisitions include Quotient AI and SiftD.ai in March, AI security operations startup Panther in June, and Electric last month. Panther had previously been valued at $1.4 billion in 2021. Electric makes PGlite, a small Postgres database for agents running locally on devices.

Ghodsi told TechCrunch that Databricks intends to make many more acquisitions.
