AMD Adds GDDR7 Identifier to Linux Graphics Driver

AMD has begun preparing its open-source Linux graphics driver for GDDR7 memory, according to the latest kernel patches reported by Wccftech.

The patches add a GDDR7 identifier to AMDGPU alongside new IP blocks. Those blocks could be associated with AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture, although the available changes do not confirm which memory type AMD will use in its next generation of graphics cards.

AMD has not confirmed a move to GDDR7. However, the new identifier provides evidence that the company is laying groundwork for support of the newer memory standard. The development could point to a transition from GDDR6 to GDDR7 in future graphics cards, but that remains an expectation rather than an announced specification.
