Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Qualcomm explains the difference

Qualcomm has announced two flagship mobile chipsets at its annual Snapdragon Summit: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. TechRadar reports that both are designed to reduce reliance on RAM and support advanced gaming and agentic AI in upcoming flagship Android phones.

Qualcomm positions the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 as its core flagship platform, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits above it as the top tier. Both use 2nm TSMC technology and include the latest Oryon CPU, with two prime cores reaching up to 5GHz and six performance cores reaching up to 4GHz. The CPU also includes a 16MB Oryon Flex Cache.

Both chipsets use a redesigned Hexagon NPU with a Hexagon Element Accelerator. Qualcomm says the NPU in the Extreme model has 50% more Large Shared Memory than the equivalent NPU in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The Extreme model also adds Adreno Neural Fusion and three AI-dedicated GPU cores.

Both include the Qualcomm Spectra ISP, but only the Extreme model has the capability to support Advanced Professional Video codecs and 8K 60fps video capture. Qualcomm says the two platforms improve graphics performance and power efficiency, although it remains unclear how fully manufacturers will use the extra capability. Motorola Signature 27 is the first announced phone with the Extreme chipset.
