TechCrunch’s Equity podcast examined whether AI companies are serious about slowing the development of frontier systems.
The discussion followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s plan to “pace the frontier.” The plan has drawn support from several industry figures, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and, to some extent, Elon Musk. However, co-host Sean O’Kane said the proposal lacked important details, including what a slowdown would mean in practice and how its claims about AI risks would be assessed.
The hosts also discussed proposals for independent third-party evaluators inside companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI to monitor safety practices and incidents. Other ideas included coordination among major AI companies in democratic countries on safety standards and limits, along with international coordination.
Co-host Kirsten Korosec said the apparent consensus could be encouraging but warned that it could also become the beginning of a cartel among frontier AI labs. The episode also addressed pushback from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who has echoed President Donald Trump’s claim that the AI backlash is a hoax and that regulation is unnecessary. The hosts questioned whether existing regulation and market pressure would provide enough safeguards, noting concerns about weak enforcement and limited consumer choice.
