AI agents need governed enterprise data before production

Executives are asking whether AI agents are ready for production, but TechRadar contributor Jerry Caviston argues that the first question should concern the data those agents can access. Model security and performance cannot compensate for outdated customer information, duplicate records or material that was never properly classified.

Before deployment, organizations need governed inputs, appropriate access controls and a reliable record of what an agent produces. Governance must cover decisions, instructions, retrieved content and documents, because traceability and defensibility become important when AI contributes to significant enterprise decisions.

Caviston says organizations should identify sensitive and regulated information, apply classification and retention policies, and distinguish current sources from unreliable legacy data. Selected datasets should preserve the context and relationships that give the information meaning.

Agents should receive only the data required for their defined tasks. A customer service agent may need current account and transaction information, for example, but not legal files or historic employee records. Organizations should also retain prompts, outputs and resulting decisions so reviewers can reconstruct an action and trace it to its source data and authorizing function.

The article concludes that accountability cannot rest with technology teams alone. Security, data, privacy, legal and compliance leaders all have roles, while a named business owner remains responsible. The article was published as part of TechRadar Pro Perspectives, and its views are those of the author, not necessarily TechRadarPro or Future plc.
