GPT-6 arrives in ChatGPT, but Plus users can access it only through Work

OpenAI has made GPT-6 available in ChatGPT, but ChatGPT Plus users cannot select it from the familiar Chat model picker. For those users, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are available through Work and Codex.

The change also highlights a broader difference between Chat and Work. Chat is designed for back-and-forth conversations, where users guide the system step by step. Work is aimed at larger, multistep tasks that may involve researching information, examining files or using websites before returning a result.

OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its most capable model for demanding work, including software operation, browsing, research and professional workflows. GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are smaller models designed to be faster and less expensive while carrying over advances from GPT-6 Astra.

GPT-6 Astra has been available since earlier this month, while GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra, is available in regular Chat on some higher-tier plans. In a ChatGPT Plus account, the Work model picker includes GPT-6 Luna High, GPT-6 Sol Light, GPT-6 Sol Medium, GPT-6 Astra Light and GPT-6 Astra Medium. The launch makes OpenAI’s separation between conversational Chat and task-focused Work more significant for users who previously stayed in Chat.
