Apple has clarified that its new Texture and Grain controls for stylizing photos are more limited on older iPhones than its initial wording suggested.
The controls were announced with the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro. An Apple press release initially said they would be available on older devices such as the iPhone 16 and iPhone Air that support the latest generation of Photographic Styles.
Apple has since updated its press releases to say the controls are available only for photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and on the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on iPhone Duo. The controls can adjust texture to enhance or smooth a subject’s skin and add film grain.
The original version of a September 11 release still appears elsewhere with a footnote listing the feature on iOS 27 for iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo.
A Reddit user and The Verge found that an iPhone 16 Pro Max and an iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 27 could use the controls only with sample photos taken on an iPhone 18 Pro by photographer Austin Mann. They were unavailable for photos captured on those older phones. The Verge contacted Apple but did not immediately receive a response.
