TechRadar’s James Day reviewed the Aosu R1 Ultra, a video doorbell that stores footage locally without requiring a subscription. The included AosuBase Mini has 8GB of storage and keeps a rolling 60 days of recordings. Alerts, live view, two-way talk, detection zones and playback are included; AosuProtect+ is an optional cloud service.
Day found daylight footage sharp and said radar and AI human recognition support detection. The doorbell also offers voice disguise options. But he noted that the advertised 5MP UHD resolution is not true UHD: the sensor records at 2560 x 1920, or 4.9 megapixels. Aosu’s stated 166-degree field of view is diagonal; the horizontal and vertical views are 133 and 103 degrees.
The battery is rated at 5,000mAh and is not removable. Day says it may last six months between charges, but recharging from flat takes six hours and requires unclipping the whole doorbell. The review lists prices of $135.99 and £139.99, while noting the device is often discounted. AosuProtect+ is optional, though the review says local footage depends on the base station, so recordings may be lost if it fails or is taken.
