xAI’s dot.com Redirects to Grok After OpenAI Launches Dots

OpenAI launched Dots, an always-on AI agent with a colorful, rounded avatar, on Tuesday. The domain dot.com, which belongs to Elon Musk’s xAI, currently redirects visitors to the download page for xAI’s Grok chatbot app.

TechCrunch reports that the domain was transferred in July, according to the Whois domain owner registry. The timing prompted online speculation that xAI acquired it as a prank tied to OpenAI’s launch. An anonymous X user, @birdabo, who describes themselves as an xAI watcher, drew attention to the redirect in a post that went viral.

That explanation has not been confirmed. xAI may have bought the domain for ordinary reasons, such as catching searches from people who mistype “bot” as “dot.” TechCrunch says it contacted xAI for comment. The company does not own bot.com, and the article notes that another apparent typo, vot.com, is listed for sale.

The more direct-match domain dots.com belongs to a long-defunct company, according to the report. The redirect and its timing are observable, but xAI’s reason for acquiring dot.com remains unknown.
