Nvidia’s DLSS 5 has shifted from leaked technology and unofficial mods to an official launch this week. The company demonstrated it in NBA 2K27 at Gamescom 2026, offering a clearer view of what its neural rendering model can do.
DLSS 5 currently supports only RTX 5000 graphics cards, but Nvidia has confirmed plans to expand official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series. Work could begin in early 2027, while modders have already made the technology run on RTX 3000 and RTX 2000 models.
Unofficial experiments have exposed a major performance problem: frame rates can fall by 40% to 50%, although some reports indicate drops closer to 30%. Those results use a pre-release version, so Nvidia may improve performance through further optimization.
The technology’s visual benefits also appear highly situational. Modders have shown improvements to background details, NPC crowd faces, lighting, and shadows. However, excessive slider settings can create uncanny effects. DLSS 5 includes granular controls for intensity, tone, and structure, suggesting that careful tuning will be important. The NBA 2K27 demonstration provides an official example of the technology working effectively.
