Microsoft says devices running unsupported versions of Windows will lose access to Windows Update and stop receiving updates after a set of Windows Update certificates expires in 2027.
The certificates are due to expire on May 17, 2027, and June 19, 2027. Microsoft said the dates reflect its standard security practice of replacing certificates when they expire. It advised users and administrators to move affected devices to a supported version of Windows before then.
Microsoft recommended that IT administrators identify devices running older or unsupported Windows versions, keep supported devices current with monthly Windows updates, and plan upgrades for unsupported devices ahead of the expiration dates. The company said there is still time to review and plan those upgrades.
The change does not apply to devices that receive updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), which downloads updates and distributes them across enterprise networks, according to Microsoft.
