Ukrainian forces intercepted and destroyed a Russian KVS strike drone with a distinctive circular wing, after its unusual shape prompted a joke about a UFO.
Personnel from Ukraine’s 414th Birds of Magyar Brigade intercepted the aircraft on October 8, 2026, during an aerial engagement. Footage released by the unit shows the drone shortly before it was destroyed. The brigade wrote: “What was that? Probably a UFO! It came out of nowhere... Oh, wait, it did fall.”
The aircraft was identified as the Knyaz Vladimir Svyatoslavich, a relatively recent strike platform developed by the Ushkuynik research center. Its circular wing surrounds the fuselage. The KVS uses a 10-inch frame and is intended for strikes over intermediate distances, but its precise operational range is unspecified. Its design is intended to support vertical departures and transition to horizontal flight with improved energy efficiency.
Ushkuynik also makes reconnaissance and fiber optic systems. One of its other aircraft, the Knyaz Veshchiy Oleg, is used for surveillance and artillery-fire adjustment. Ukrainian intelligence said in April that the reconnaissance platform reportedly operates at distances of up to 45 kilometers, flies for about 3.5 hours, and can reach 130 km/h.
Reports describe interceptions of the Knyaz Veshchiy Oleg in February and January 2026. Those incidents involved the reconnaissance aircraft, not the circular-wing KVS. The available information does not establish an overall interception rate for either model.
