Tinder launches Group Hangouts for group dating

Tinder has launched Group Hangouts, a feature that lets groups of friends discover, match with and make plans alongside other groups around shared activities. The company announced the feature on Wednesday.

To start, users choose an activity and invite at least two friends. A group needs at least three members before its profile can appear in Tinder’s main card stack, and groups can include up to 15 people. Users can like other groups; if at least one person in each group likes the other, they connect in a shared chat to make plans.

Members can leave a conversation without leaving their friend group, and can block or report another participant if they feel uncomfortable. The feature appears at the top of Tinder’s home screen and is rolling out in phases in the U.S. and select markets. More markets are expected to follow.

Tinder launched Double Date last year, allowing users to pair with a friend and browse other pairs. In March, it introduced an Events tab for finding local activities, and this month expanded in-person events to dozens of additional cities. Bumble is also pursuing group-oriented meetups with its Plans feature.

The rollout comes as Tinder seeks to re-engage users. The company’s revenue declined in its latest quarter, while monthly active users fell 7% in the second quarter, following an 8% decline in the previous quarter. Claire Watanabe, Tinder’s VP of product management, told TechCrunch that one inspiration was a college women’s volleyball team that created a Tinder profile while traveling for away games to explore a new town and meet locals.
