TikTok to Pay at Least $100 Million in Alabama Settlement

TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million to settle allegations that the short-form video platform misled users about safety and was designed to addict children. The case had been scheduled to go to trial on Monday.

According to the Alabama attorney general’s office, the company could pay the state a total of $300 million, depending on “certain conditions.” The settlement also requires TikTok to introduce a two-hour daily time limit for underage users, add parental controls, restrict overnight use and limit cosmetic filters.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said in a statement that parents in the state can “rest easier” knowing protections are in place against social media addiction. TikTok said the settlement “builds on our commitment and core objective to continually enhance our robust safety tools to protect teens.”

In August, TikTok reached a $400 million settlement with the Department of Justice over allegations that the platform violated child privacy laws.
