Stack Overflow Survey Finds Developer Burnout and AI Distrust

Stack Overflow’s annual developer survey points to rising concerns about burnout and how artificial intelligence may affect developers’ jobs. The survey also finds that many developers use AI tools, while remaining cautious about their role in coding.

Some 45.1% of respondents described themselves as “complacent” in their current roles, while 32.6% said they were “unhappy” and 22.3% “happy.” Burnout or fatigue was cited as the main cause by 21.1% of the respondents in the complacent group.

The survey found that 65.9% of developers use AI assistants or agents, while 17.2% do not use AI tools. Meanwhile, 17% said they were concerned AI could replace them. More than half, 52%, had learned a new programming language in the past year.

Employment patterns also shifted: 10.5% of respondents said they freelance or run a business as sole proprietors, up from 3.9% in the previous year’s survey. Remote work remains common, with 34.8% saying they work from anywhere.

Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar said developers’ skepticism can act as a safeguard as AI agents become more autonomous. He said developers need transparency, source attribution and technical context to check the accuracy and relevance of AI-generated answers and decisions.
