SpaceX is working with Qualcomm to build out Starlink Mobile, its nationwide mobile network. Under a multi-year deal, SpaceX plans to use Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure at “tens of thousands” of 5G cell sites across the United States, with the first deployments planned for 2027.
The platform combines hardware and software designed to boost network coverage, capacity, and efficiency. SpaceX plans to pair it with its direct-to-cell satellite constellation.
The partnership is part of SpaceX’s effort to make Starlink Mobile a “major” US carrier, putting it in direct competition with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. The company has acquired spectrum, and recent reports suggested it was exploring an acquisition of Boost Mobile.
Qualcomm executive vice president and general manager Durga Malladi said the companies are building cellular infrastructure in the United States and advancing 5G. He also said they have an opportunity to “lay the foundation” for 6G in the coming years.
