Sigma’s 50-120mm F2.8 aims to be an APS-C legend and a full-frame alternative

Sigma has completed its trio of F2.8 zooms for APS-C cameras with the 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary. The telephoto zoom has a full-frame equivalent focal length of 75-180mm, and joins the 10-18mm F2.8 and 18-50mm F2.8.

TechRadar’s Timothy Coleman describes the new lens as compact, light and affordable compared with full-frame alternatives. It measures 10cm (4 inches) long, weighs 13.4oz (380g) and costs $799 / £699 (about AU$1,300). Coleman says his full-frame 70-200mm F2.8 lens weighs around 35oz (1kg) and cost more than $2,000 / £2,000—around three times the price of Sigma’s new lens.

The 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary goes on sale October 22 in Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF versions. Coleman notes that Sony and Canon do not offer an equivalent lens for their APS-C mirrorless cameras. Fujifilm offers the XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR, which he says is twice as heavy and more expensive. Nikon photographers will not get the new lens at launch; Sigma has not said whether it will come to Nikon Z mount. The company did announce that its 16-300mm travel zoom is coming to Nikon Z.

Coleman has not tested the new lens, but says he has high hopes after testing Sigma’s 10-18mm F2.8 for Sony. He notes that the telephoto zoom reaches 180mm rather than 200mm and does not work with teleconverters. A Reddit thread has already called it “an APS-C legend in the making.”
