TechRadar reviewer Alastair Jennings tested Seagate’s One Touch 4TB, a portable hard drive that connects over USB-C and draws power from the connected device. Its 4TB capacity can accommodate media files, including HD and 4K video, though the drive uses HDD technology rather than an SSD.
In tests, read and write transfers exceeded 140MB/s in some cases. Jennings edited 4K footage directly from the drive in Final Cut Pro X; he said editing a five-minute production was smooth, though the computer and drive occasionally needed time to catch up.
The included Seagate Toolkit software offers backup options and password protection with hardware AES 256-bit encryption. Jennings found that enabling encryption made little difference to performance in his benchmarking. The drive arrives formatted as exFAT and is recognized by Mac, PC, and Linux systems, according to the review.
The review also highlights Synology Deep Search, an AI-powered file search feature available through a partner offer. The offer includes six months of free use before a paid plan is required. Other partner deals include Adobe, Synology, and Mylio, with limited trial periods.
At the time of the review, the 4TB model was listed at £179/US$199. The article’s pricing section gives separate prices for the two capacities: 2TB and 4TB models cost $160 and $200 in the US, and £112 and £176 in the UK, respectively. The drive is available in blue, grey, and white.
