PIA v3.8.0 makes WireGuard the default and targets faster Windows connections

Private Internet Access (PIA) has released version 3.8.0 of its VPN app, making WireGuard the default protocol across platforms. The company says the change could increase Windows connection speeds by more than 200%.

On Windows, the update switches WireGuard to the WireGuard-NT 1.1 kernel driver. PIA’s patch notes say the driver can deliver “more than 3x” WireGuard speeds on higher-bandwidth systems. The update also adds the OpenVPN DCO kernel driver for Windows, which PIA says can increase connection bandwidth by up to 100%, depending on the system and connection specifications.

OpenVPN remains available as an optional protocol. Linux and macOS gain the AmneziaWG protocol, which can obscure VPN use while retaining WireGuard. Users can enable it on the Protocol page by selecting WireGuard and turning on Obfuscation.

The release also fixes a macOS issue that could leave the app hanging when setup of the split tunnelling system extension was incomplete in system settings. Separately, PIA recently added 10 server locations across the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia. These update details and performance figures are claims or descriptions from PIA, as reported by TechRadar.
