OpenAI plans to buy artificial intelligence chips from Google, adding another supplier as it expands computing capacity beyond its reliance on Nvidia. The reported purchase would involve Google’s tensor processing units (TPUs), according to The Information. Financial terms, quantities and delivery schedules have not been disclosed.
The plans follow a period of rising demand for computing infrastructure used to train and run AI models. Google has expanded commercial sales of TPUs, which were previously used mainly in its own data centers. Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) remain widely used for AI work, and OpenAI is already a major Nvidia customer.
OpenAI began renting Google AI chips in 2025. The companies also have a cloud arrangement: OpenAI recently announced that its advanced AI models would be available through Google Cloud.
OpenAI is developing its own processor as well. In June 2026, it said it had designed an AI chip with Broadcom and intended to deploy it before the end of 2026.
Alphabet finance chief Anat Ashkenazi has said the company expected to recognize a small portion of revenue from TPU sales agreements by the end of 2026, with most of that revenue expected in 2027. The report also said Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft were expected to spend as much as $600 billion on AI infrastructure during 2026.
