OpenAI says it is testing a combined experience for Chat and Work tabs in ChatGPT, while preparing to share usage allowances between ChatGPT and Codex. The company described the plans in an email seen by BleepingComputer.
The combined experience will initially reach a small group of users in the coming weeks. Selected users will be able to move between regular conversations and more complex tasks without switching modes. OpenAI said users could bring in files and plugins, ask ChatGPT to build a website or create a presentation, and review and guide its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.
OpenAI also plans to draw ChatGPT and Codex usage from the same allowance for Pro subscribers. It says Unlimited Instant is included and will not count toward that shared limit; more advanced models and complex tasks will use more, depending on the work. Remaining usage and reset times will appear under Settings > Usage. If the allowance runs out, users can wait for a reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.
Separately, OpenAI has already doubled Work and Codex allowances for Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 subscriptions, effective October 29. The source does not specify a year for that date.
