OpenAI, Anthropic and Hugging Face leaders urge UN AI standards

The heads of OpenAI, Anthropic and Hugging Face have told the United Nations that the pace of artificial intelligence development and the risks it poses to society require international coordination.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman called for common standards to evaluate AI capabilities and risks, establish safeguards, and assess how much human oversight is maintained. He also urged countries to develop faster incident-reporting, classification and disclosure protocols so the world can learn from failures before they become catastrophes.

“If AI is to be democratic, the most important decisions cannot be made by labs in San Francisco alone,” Altman said. He called for national and international cooperation for what he described as the collective good.

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei made similar comments, saying poorly managed AI could pose a risk to humanity as a whole. He said further development required more stringent safety standards and that Anthropic would slow down as necessary to ensure its released AI technologies were safe.

Hugging Face chief executive Clement Delangue also called for stronger global standards for monitoring and incident disclosure.

At the same UN conference, Michael Kratsios, a technology adviser to US President Donald Trump, acknowledged that AI development was accelerating and involved risks. He rejected pausing development or constraining it through new global governance structures.
