NVIDIA has built prototypes of next-generation co-packaged optics (CPO) and optical-fiber technologies for potential use in future products, according to Wccftech.
The report says NVIDIA presented “Optical Integration for the Next Generation of AI” at SEMICON West 2026. The presentation discussed CPO and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) as approaches to meet AI and computing needs at scale.
NVIDIA’s proposed design moves optical engines from substrates directly onto the interposer, the report says. That is a change from existing architectures, though the source does not detail specific performance comparisons or product plans.
The report also says DWDM pushes optical speeds to 256 Gb/s. It does not specify the conditions for that figure or when products using the prototypes might arrive. NVIDIA’s work remains at the prototype stage, according to the report.
