Nvidia CEO describes Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra as a four-year project

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Ultra as the result of a four-year development effort, calling the computer “incredible” and “a work of love.” He spoke at a developer event in London, according to TechRadar, whose reporter Mike Moore attended.

Huang said several thousand engineering years went into the project. He said Nvidia and Microsoft created a new chip and waited for Blackwell to be ready. The laptop is the first Microsoft device powered by an Nvidia chip.

Microsoft revealed the Surface Laptop Ultra in September 2026. It is aimed at developers and AI work, and uses Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, an N1X processor and RTX Blackwell graphics. Huang said its computing capacity is 1 petaflops and that it is the first Nvidia GPU with shared memory.

Huang said the team designed the computer with AI agents in mind. He described a vision in which users could message a PC to carry out tasks such as rendering images or updating slides, then send the results back. He said the system was intended to run AI frameworks and models, as well as PC applications.

The device was scheduled to launch on October 16, 2026, according to the report.
