Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have proposed financial measures that, according to TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff, do not address the wider problems linked to rapid AI development.
On Monday, October 19, 2026, Musk posted on X that next year he would give one SpaceX share to every child in America, saying it would be the first of many. The article estimates there are 72 million children in the country and puts a SpaceX share’s approximate value at $150. It notes that any shares placed in children’s accounts would likely be inaccessible until they became adults.
Amodei proposed a public fund based on 5% of Anthropic’s shares when the company goes public, which the article says is expected next month, in November. TechRadar estimates that if Anthropic were valued at $1 trillion, the fund would be worth close to $50 billion. The proposal leaves open who would manage the fund and how it would be allocated, including whether it might support schools, AI education, job retraining, or trade schools.
Ulanoff argues that neither proposal substitutes for regulation, oversight, or broader discussion of AI’s effects, including job losses, cybersecurity threats, and data center impacts. He says funding could help with workforce retraining and research into more environmentally and community-friendly data centers, while noting that it is unclear whether either plan will happen. In his view, AI development is continuing, making discussion of how to manage it urgent.
