Mod brings Nvidia Smooth Motion to RTX 3000 GPUs

A modder has made Nvidia’s driver-level Smooth Motion feature work on some RTX 3000 series graphics cards, according to TechRadar, which cites Wccftech. The unofficial NVSmooth30 mod is available on GitHub and has been confirmed to work on an RTX 3050 laptop and an RTX 3080 desktop GPU.

Smooth Motion generates frames in games without built-in frame-generation support, a capability that can be useful for older games and emulator titles. The mod alters Nvidia’s NvPresent64 driver DLL and bypasses compatibility checks for Ampere hardware. It uses “conservative metadata retargeting” from Ada Lovelace, the architecture behind RTX 4000 series GPUs, to target Ampere.

The mod’s creator says users can place the DLL in a game’s folder and enable Smooth Motion through Nvidia Profile Inspector. The project is experimental and may cause game bugs, crashes or other issues. It must not be used in online games with anti-cheat systems, as that could result in a ban.

The report comes amid high GPU prices, which it attributes to a RAM crisis. It argues that official support for features such as Smooth Motion could benefit people holding onto older cards. Nvidia has told TechRadar it plans to add some backward compatibility, likely for RTX 4000 models first; support for RTX 3000 cards later remains uncertain.
